I have now travelled more than 4,000 km with my küschall Advance wheelchair which enables me to travel around the world. So now it’s time to give you my opinion of it: the first thing that’s different when you look at it for the first time is that it doesn’t have a fabric seat like other conventional wheelchairs. In fact, it’s made of carbon! Amazing design J  The second thing I noticed straight away is its extra light weight. This makes it highly manoeuvrable in use and very easy to lift to put into a car. So easy, it takes you by surprise! What’s more, the backrest can be folded onto the seat, so when it’s folded the overall dimensions are really minimal. What else? Well, it has already experienced the sand and seawater of the Calabrian beaches, the extreme heat in Greece and the rocks of the Balkan mountains, without ever showing any weakness!! And I’d like to point out that I must have folded down the backrest at least a hundred times to put the wheelchair into cars, and it hasn’t shown any sign of fatigue so far. It should be clear by now that I was happy to have it with me on the road!

Voilà déjà maintenant plus de 4'000 km parcourus avec mon fauteuil roulant küschall Advance qui me permet de parcourir les routes du globe. Il est donc à présent temps de vous donner mon impression sur celui-ci : la première chose qui est différente quand on le voit pour la première fois est le fait que son assise ne soit pas en toile comme sur les autres fauteuils roulants classiques. En effet, elle est en carbone ! Sacré design J  La seconde chose qui m’a directement interpellé est son poids hyper léger. De ce fait il est super maniable à utiliser et en plus très facile à porter pour le mettre dans une voiture. Une facilité qui en est déconcertante ! De plus comme son dossier est repliable sur l’assise, l’encombrement total est vraiment minime une fois plié. Pour le reste, il a déjà connu le sable et l’eau de mer des plages de Calabre, les chaleurs extrêmes de la Grèce et les rochers des montagnes des Balkans et tout ça sans jamais faiblir !! Je tiens aussi à souligner que j’ai bien du déjà rabattre ce dossier une bonne centaine de fois pour mettre mon fauteuil dans des voitures et que jusqu’à présent, il n’a présenté aucun signe de fatigue. Vous l’aurez compris, j’apprécie sa compagnie sur la route !

One year after his long crossing of 4500 kms of the US, Antoine, again with its friend Florent, is going to renew the experience but in Europe this time! With a travel of 9000 kms planed, from June to September 2012, Antoine is pushing his limits again!

Antoine: paraplegia, a life challenge for a young man

You might already know Antoine after his first experience on the küschall blog last year with a 3 months trip in the United States. If not, here is a little presentation of this fantastic person!

June 2008. Aged 19, Antoine is active and outdoorsy, with a passion for extreme sports. A paragliding expert, Antoine frequently undertakes acrobatic maneuvers in mid air to push the limits of his favorite sport. One fateful session, Antoine is startled during flight, resulting in a crash that consequently deprived him the use of his legs. This marked the start of the biggest challenge of Antoine’s life, spending long periods in rehabilitation therapy, not knowing if he would ever walk again. After a seemingly interminable wait of one year, doctors finally concluded that Antoine would spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Tough news indeed, for this young man who had recently celebrated his 19th birthday. After an initial period of sadness and isolation, Antoine courageously decided to grab life by the horns and challenge himself once more. His ambition? To prove to the world that he could still do anything he wished, even in a wheelchair. Now aged 23, Antoine is an experienced traveler with already many countries visited as India, Nepal, United-Kingdom and Ukraine… Last year, he even took up the challenge to cross the US in three months! What an inspiring life lesson from a positive-minded young person!

From France to Mongolia

From France to Mongolia, through Italy, Greece, Turkey and Kazakhstan… this is the intrepid trail that Antoine is going to realize in only three months. With a total distance of 9000kms, Antoine is going to discover five different countries and cultures and he choose to share all his experience on the küschall blog again. 

As last year, the küschall blog will serve as Antoine’s online diary during the three months of his journey; here Antoine will be sharing his experiences, posting pictures and articles, charting his motivations, inspirations and expectations during what is set to be the trip of a lifetime. The blog will be uploaded with video content at a later stage, to complete the adventure.

Antoine: une vie de challenges pour ce jeune homme
Certains d’entre vous le connaisse déjà suite à son premier passage sur le blog l’an dernier, pour les autres voici un bref coup de projecteur sur la vie de cet étonnant jeune homme. Juin 2008, Antoine, jeune homme de 19 ans, est un passionné de sports extrêmes. Véritable expert en parapente, Antoine repousse fréquemment ses limites en s’essayant à plusieurs mouvements d’acrobatie dans les airs. C’est lors d’une de ces sessions acrobatiques qu’Antoine est surpris et heurte accidentellement le sol avec son parapente. Cette chute le prive de l’usage de ses deux jambes. Cet acte marque ainsi le début du plus gros défi de la vie d’Antoine. Il passe plus d’un an dans un centre de rééducation sans pour autant vraiment savoir s’il pourra un jour à nouveau marcher. C’est après cette longue période d’attente, d’efforts et d’espérance que les docteurs concluent qu’Antoine passera le restant de ses jours en fauteuil roulant. Quelle terrible nouvelle pour un garçon qui vient alors à peine de fêter ses 19 ans! S’en suit une première période de tristesse et d’isolation mais Antoine fait rapidement preuve d’une incroyable capacité à remonter la pente en se lance des défis toujours plus impressionnants. Son ambition ? Prouver au monde entier qu’il est toujours possible de faire ce que l’on souhaite, même en fauteuil roulant. Aujourd’hui âgé de 23 ans, Antoine a déjà visité l’Inde, le Népal, le Royaume-Uni, l’Ukraine, les Etats-Unis ainsi que bien d’autres pays encore. Cette année, il a décidé de se lancer dans une fulgurante traversée de la France vers la Mongolie ! Quelle leçon de vie venant de ce jeune homme!

Patrik ist ein 36 Jahre junger Deutscher, der eine Leidenschaft für Buggykiting und Kitesurfen hat. Vor zehn Jahren wurde Patrik nach einem Motorradunfall querschnittgelähmt. Seit 2004 sieht man ihn häufig beim Buggykiten und Kitesurfen. In naher Zukunft, wird er seine Projekte und Aktivitäten im zusammenhang mit diesen Sportarten mit uns teilen.

Hi everybody,

I came back from Thailand, where I spent 19 great weeks, a month ago. I have delayed this last post because I wanted to find out what this trip has changed in me. First, I have to say that everything went fine and that many people helped me when I needed it. Human being is good and like helping other.

Back home, I can now say that this trip helped me to find myself again, to increase my resourcefulness, my self confidence, and of course to do what I really like, travelling and meeting new people. I adapted myself to each situation and I am quite proud of myself.

In this post, I want to thank people who read my blog, my familly and my friends who have always believed in me and have follow my trip. Thanks to the küschall company for the sponsoring. I also thank the many people I met over there and who have helped me when that was necessary. I would like to thank my wheelchair, which is light but strong and easy to drive and which had great performance during all the trip. If you are disabled and if you don’t know küschall wheelchairs, I recommend you to try one. Try it means adopt it.

My wheelchair and I have travelled trough Thailand and we have done many kilometers without any problems. We will keep travelling around. I hope that my experience will tempt other people, disabled or even valid, to do whatever they want to. Keep your fears away and jump!

I have now a project. I would like to create a travel guide for disabled people. I don’t know yet if this project will be realized but I will try my best to do it.

Voici déjà 1 mois que je suis rentrée de Thaïlande où j’ai passé 19 merveilleuses semaines.

J’ai attendu un moment avant d’écrire ce dernier article car je voulais bien prendre le temps de me rendre compte de ce que je venais de faire et de ce que ce voyage m’a apporté. Tout d’abord, je dois vous dire que tout s’est bien passé, que je n’ai pas eu de problème majeur et que j’ai reçu l’aide de nombreux inconnus lorsque j’en avais besoin. L’être humain est bon en général et prêt à aider son prochain.

De retour ici, je me rends compte que ce voyage m’a permis de me retrouver, d’augmenter ma « débrouillardise», de reprendre confiance en moi et surtout de faire ce que j’aime. Je me suis adaptée à chaque situation et, tout en restant modeste, je suis assez fière de moi.

Je profite de cet article pour remercier toutes les personnes qui ont lu mon blog et laissé des commentaires. Je remercie également la société küschall pour leur sponsoring, ainsi que mes amis et famille qui ont cru en moi et qui ont suivi mon parcours. Je remercie aussi les nombreuses personnes que j’ai rencontré lors de ce voyage et toutes celles qui m’ont aidé lorsque cela était nécessaire. J’ai également envie de remercier mon fauteuil sans lequel je n’aurais jamais pu effectuer ce voyage. En effet mon fauteuil a réellement bien supporté le voyage et sa légèreté et sa maniabilité m’ont bien soulagé. Si vous êtes une personne à mobilité réduite et que vous ne connaissez pas les fauteuils küschall, je vous recommande d’en essayer un ! De mon point de vue, l’essayer c’est l’adopter. Nous avons, lui et moi, parcouru de nombreux kilomètres à travers toute la Thaïlande et nous continuerons à en parcourir ici et ailleurs.

J’espère que mon expérience donnera l’envie à d’autres personnes, à mobilité réduite ou même valides, de se lancer, de voyager ou de faire tout ce qu’elles ont envi de faire. Laissez vos peurs de côté et foncez…

De retour ici, j’ai un projet, j’aimerais créer un guide de voyage pour personnes à mobilité réduite. Je ne sais pas encore si ce projet se réalisera mais je mettrai tout en œuvre pour y arriver.

Let’s have a little summary (with comments and personal feelings) about places where I stayed during these few months. First, you must know 2 things: 1 baht = 0,033 CHF or 0,020€ and when I talk about accessibility, I talk about accessibility with my wheelchair which measure 67 cm.

Bangkok :

1. Citadines Appartment: 02 257 22 77- 1600 bahts - nice but a little bit expensive, accessible.

2. Ibis Nana: 02 667 5888-1200 bahts - the rooms are small but some of them are wheelchair friendly.

3. Ibis Sathorn: 02 610 5188- 1200 bahts- same than Ibis Nana.

4. Royal Asia Lodge : 02 251 5514 – special offer at 800 bahts from their website – located on Sukhumvit Road but in a calm street, the ramp is very hard to climb but the guard present 24/24h will help you.

5. Furama Xclusive : As a friend offered it to me, I don’t know the price but it is quite luxurous, 02 255 4224, very good service, accessible.

Surin : Sangthong hotel, 04 451 2099 - 600 bahts during the elephants’show w-e, then 270 bahts, bad matress, 3 small steps to get into the ground floor’s rooms.

Si Saket : Pompiman hotel, I don’t have the phone number but if you type the name on internet, you’ll be able to book it - 500 bahts – different activities at the ground floor – ramp to get to the hotel but very big step to get to the bathroom and the door is not wide enough.

Kantaralak : Krachang Yai Guesthouse – 04 562 8047 – 650 bahts – small and calm guesthouse with swimming pool. The couple who runs this place are very nice. 2 rooms are accessible.

Ubon Ratchathani : Panjunplace – 04 528 0839 - 450 bahts – 3 steps to get in the hotel but spacious room.

Khon Kaen : Roma Hotel – 04 323 7711 - 550 bahts – accessible.

Pitsanulok : I don’t remember the names of the 2 hotels I stayed in but the second one was at the bus station and costed 170 bahts.

Chiang Rai : Baan Bua Guesthouse – 05 371 8880 – 450 bahts – There is a very nice garden. The small rooms are on the ground floor and accessible.

Hua Hin : Mod Guesthouse – 03 251 2296 – 800 bahts for 1 room with 2 single beds – guesthouse over the see, accessible.

Pattaya : Pinewood Residence – 038 361 402 – 2400 baths for a suite of 3 beds – hotel and rooms accessible.

Chiang Mai :

1. All in one : 053 207 133 – 650 bahts – nice garden, ground floor accessible but need help from the guard present 24/24h to go to the garden.

2. Rosa Place : 081 724 74 24 – 450 bahts, the owner is nice, very good bed, there is 1 step to get to room on the ground floor.

Phuket : Mook Anda Place – 076 246 333- 900 bahts- very nice place but not accessible, situated in the middle of the town, not by the see.

Kanchanaburi : Mr Tee Guesthouse, 034 624 074 – 250 bahts – the room is accessible but need to do 2 transferts to get to the toilets. The way to get to the main road is going up big time but I managed to do.

Rangsit : Canal View – 081 372 1552- 1500 bahts the week, normally is to rent per month, accessible.

Bang Saphan : Dang Bungalow – 089 207 89 17 – 300 bahts – idyllic, accessible because the very nice owner made a ramp for me.

Surin : Sangthong hotel, 04 451 2099 - 600 bahts pendant le festival des éléphants, sinon, le prix est de 270 bahts, mauvais matelas, 3 marches pour accéder aux chambres du rez-de-chaussée.

Si Saket : Pompiman hotel, je n’ai pas le numéro de tél mais en tapant le nom sur internet, il vous sera possible de réserver - 500 bahts – diverses animations au rez-de-chaussée- rampe d’accès à l’hôtel mais grosse marche pour entrer dans la salle de bains et pas accessible en largeur.
